How is RSV Transmitted?
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the most common cause of lower respiratory tract infections in children. It is spread through water droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes and through direct contact. RSV infection can be spread to others by contact with secretions from the nose and throat of infected people, such as by caring for them.
People infected are usually contagious for 3-8 days and may become more contagious a day or two after they show signs of illness. However, infants with weakened immune system may continue to spread after they stop showing symptoms, for as long as 4 weeks according to the CDC.
How is RSV Treated?
RSV usually goes away on its own without any treatment. In some cases, it may need to be treated with antiviral medication or other medications prescribed by your doctor.
