What to expect at your visit
- Assessment first — not every lump is ready to drain, and draining too early does not help.
- The area is numbed before any procedure.
- Drainage and dressing, with packing if the cavity requires it.
- A follow-up plan — recheck timing, dressing changes, and the signs that mean you should return sooner.
When to go to the emergency room instead
- A rapidly spreading red area with fever and feeling very unwell
- Severe pain out of proportion to how the skin looks
- A skin infection on the face near the eye
- Red streaks spreading from the site
- Being immunocompromised with a spreading infection
