Florida’s 14-day rule: why the first visit matters
Under Florida’s Personal Injury Protection law (s. 627.736, Fla. Stat.), PIP medical benefits apply only if you receive initial medical care within 14 days of the accident. The 2026 legislative session left the law unchanged, so the deadline still applies to drivers, passengers, pedestrians and cyclists covered by a Florida auto policy. Being seen promptly does two things: it starts treatment before soft-tissue injuries stiffen, and it creates the medical record your claim is built on.
PIP pays up to $10,000 in medical and disability benefits when a qualified provider determines you had an emergency medical condition; without that determination, medical benefits are limited to $2,500. That determination is made from the examination and documented in your chart — one more reason not to wait. PIP accepted — what to bring

- A note of who to send records to — your insurer, and your attorney if you have retained one — with your written authorization.
