Florida’s 14-day rule: why the first visit matters
Under Florida’s Personal Injury Protection law (s. 627.736, Fla. Stat.), PIP medical benefits apply only if you receive initial medical care within 14 days of the accident. The 2026 legislative session left the law unchanged, so the deadline still applies to drivers, passengers, pedestrians and cyclists covered by a Florida auto policy. Being seen promptly does two things: it starts treatment before soft-tissue injuries stiffen, and it documents your injuries from the start.
PIP has a $10,000 limit for medical and disability benefits combined, and pays 80 percent of reasonable medical expenses. Medical benefits can use that full $10,000 only when a qualified provider determines you had an emergency medical condition; without that determination, they are limited to $2,500. That determination is made from the examination and documented in your chart — one more reason not to wait. PIP accepted — what to bring

- Photo ID and, if you have one, your health insurance card for any care PIP does not cover.
