Sinus infection treatment: when antibiotics help
Sinusitis treatment depends on the cause. Most sinus infections (sinusitis) are caused by viruses and get better on their own, and antibiotics do not help those. The provider looks for the patterns that point to a bacterial infection — symptoms lasting more than ten days without getting better, symptoms that improve and then get worse again, severe facial pain or headache, or a fever lasting beyond three to four days — and prescribes an antibiotic when they are there. Sometimes the plan is a prescription to fill only if you are not better in two to three days. Several sinus infections in a year are a reason for a referral to an ear, nose and throat specialist.
Post-nasal drip treatment
Post-nasal drip — mucus running down the back of the throat — keeps many people clearing their throat and coughing long after a cold. It comes from a lingering cold, a sinus infection or allergies, and the treatment depends on which: the provider examines the nose, throat and chest, looks for a sinus infection, and recommends what will settle it, with a prescription when one is needed.
Bronchitis treatment: chest colds and walking pneumonia
Acute bronchitis — a chest cold — is usually caused by a virus, and antibiotics will not help it; the symptoms usually last less than three weeks. Treatment is for comfort and breathing: a nebulizer breathing treatment when there is wheezing, and advice on what eases the cough. When the provider suspects pneumonia instead, a chest X-ray is taken and read at the same visit. Walking pneumonia — a milder pneumonia, often caused by the bacterium Mycoplasma pneumoniae — is treated with an antibiotic. Come in, or come back, for a fever lasting more than five days or reaching 104°F, coughing up blood, shortness of breath, or symptoms lasting more than three weeks.
