Tirzepatide is a prescription medication that acts on two gut-hormone pathways (GIP and GLP-1) and is used, when appropriate, for chronic weight management with diet and activity changes. UrgentMed prescribes it only after an in-person evaluation and laboratory testing, with monitoring at scheduled follow-ups in Davie and Plantation.

How tirzepatide works differently

Both are once-weekly injections that reduce appetite and slow stomach emptying. Tirzepatide acts on a second hormone receptor as well as the GLP-1 receptor. Which one the provider recommends — if either — depends on your history, other conditions and medications, and how you have responded to treatment before. Semaglutide has its own page.

Who should not use tirzepatide

  • Anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2.
  • Anyone who is pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • People with a history of pancreatitis or significant gastrointestinal disease, assessed individually.
  • Anyone with a prior serious allergic reaction to tirzepatide or a related medication.

Side effects to know about

Gastrointestinal effects — nausea, diarrhea, decreased appetite, vomiting, constipation, stomach discomfort — are the most common, especially when starting or changing dose. Serious but less common effects include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, kidney injury from dehydration and low blood sugar in people taking certain diabetes medications. The provider reviews the full safety information with you before prescribing.

What the program includes

  • Evaluation with a provider and baseline laboratory testing on site.
  • A prescription only when the evaluation supports it.
  • Scheduled follow-up to review progress, side effects and labs — with a body composition scan each time so muscle is preserved while fat comes off — and to adjust treatment.
  • Nutrition and activity guidance throughout.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an appointment?

The program starts with an evaluation visit. Call to schedule it, or walk in and ask for a weight-loss consultation; the front desk arranges the visit with the right provider.

Will I be prescribed tirzepatide at the first visit?

Only if the evaluation and baseline labs support it. Some patients start after results return; some are advised that a different approach is more appropriate.

Is tirzepatide the same as Zepbound or Mounjaro?

Zepbound and Mounjaro are brand names of tirzepatide. Zepbound is the brand FDA-approved for chronic weight management; Mounjaro is approved for type 2 diabetes. When the evaluation supports tirzepatide for weight management, the provider can prescribe an FDA-approved brand, filled at an outside pharmacy. Your prescription names the exact product and the pharmacy that fills it, and the provider goes through the options with you at the visit.

Tirzepatide or semaglutide — which is right for me?

Neither is right for everyone. Both are once-weekly injections; tirzepatide acts on the GIP receptor as well as the GLP-1 receptor. The provider recommends one, or neither, from your history, other conditions and medications, and how you have responded to treatment before.

How often are follow-up visits?

Follow-up is scheduled by the provider based on how treatment is going — more frequent at the start and when a dose changes, then at regular intervals for monitoring.

Can I switch between semaglutide and tirzepatide?

Sometimes. The provider decides based on your response, side effects and history; switching is a clinical decision made at a visit, not a request filled at the desk.

Is this covered by insurance?

Coverage for weight-management medication varies widely by plan. The evaluation visit and laboratory testing are billed separately from any medication; ask the front desk what applies to your plan.
